Philadelphia Flyers’ Road Stretch a Chance to Come up Big

The Flyers began a four-game, ten-day road swing Tuesday night with a tenacious effort by the offense against the Winnipeg Jets. They almost came up short thanks once again to shoddy goaltending, but that's a different article. This one is a focus on the road record for the Flyers, which stands at an impressive 19-9-2.

That is good.

What is not so good is their home record (14-10-5). Look, I'm not going to pretend to have a line into the psyche of professional hockey players, but even someone as lay as I can see that something is wrong there. Call it pressure or routine or distraction but something has been hindering the Flyers at home all year. Luckily, they are playing on the road, currently one point back of the New Jersey Devils and eight back of the East-leading Rangers.

They were fortunate to come away with the win against the Jets. They outplayed them in almost every facet—every facet excluding goaltending of course, but let us not digress. If they can put forth an inspired effort as they did at Winnipeg, there is no reason to believe the Flyers could not come away with at least six points in their upcoming games against the lowly Oilers, Calgary Flames, and San Jose Sharks. All of those teams have less point totals than the Flyers.

Of course the great equalizer will be goaltending, but I already said let us not get into that.

Cross your fingers Flyers' fans. If the goaltending holds up—which sounds like a humongous if, but that's an if to be discussed elsewhere—they should be in good shape, and should be able to put their recent slump behind them.

Let's hope.

On a side note, after having just mentioned how well the Flyers play on the road, I'd like to point out this: they aren't the only ones. New Jersey is 19-10-1 away from Newark, and the Rangers are 19-8-3 when not playing in the confines of Madison Square Garden.
